My buddy David gave me a call the night before,
David: "Wanna go turkey hunting at my place?"
Me: "Um, ya!"
We arrived just barely after sunup. Exited the truck and immediately heard the woods exploding with Tom's sounding off in every direction.
We jogged a good 100 yards, he hit the call and we got a response. Sat. Waited 5 min. Called again. It responded further away.
Sprinted 150 yards to get it front of him, found a place to sit. Hit the call. Instant response 50 yards away.
Beautiful bird. Beautiful morning.
Fastest hunt of my life. Took all of 15 min. start to finish.
This little girl put the hammer down on the ducks, and her foot down on us. "I'm not putting any more of that facepaint on you made me wear last time. LOL.
Way to go girl!
This girl is turning into a real workhoarse/dog.
I can tell the light has come on and she knows the deal.
In her first year when she saw me load up the decoys and guns in the truck she would flip out and be a wild child.
Now, when she see's me load up the decoys and guns in the truck she still flips out and is a wild child BUT, once we get to the waters edge - it's all business baby!
Luci's vet and I snuck out mid-week for a quick 2-man hunt.
Cold weather blew in and froze the hole we were going to hunt solid that held 50-70 birds the day before.
So, not to be denied, we broke a 20' x 40' hole and slid the giant sheet under the other ice.
Put out 4 decoys and 2 motion decoys.
5 minutes after legal we were done.
Single digits. We were all ready to get out of there.
What an epic hunt though.
The ducks kept pouring into that tiny hole as we walked away. Amazing.
Luci appeared unfazed. 😱
What a great morning out with awesome clients that were willing to brave the single digits morning.
Things started off slow as we laboriously tried broking sheet ice on the winter wheat hoping to get to some water below. No bueno.
Ended up setting decoys on top of ice and ponded in a few MOJO's.
Legal came and we watched thousands of birds... land 500 yards away on the neighbors field. My heart sunk.
But then, it happened. A lone goose seemed lost and meandered over to our spread. He got lit up pretty quick AND the birds on the other field got up AND CAME OUR WAY.
Was a pretty quick morning after that and nobody was complaining about the cold any longer.
Put together a quick hunt with my buddy Keith and his friend before the Christmas festivities hit full swing.
Had a literal blast with these divers!
